COMPROVISED: BOS at The Lily Pad
| |
COMPROVISED is an Experimental & Collaborative Music Series aiming to avoid or shatter genre barriers, and to explore the boundaries between composition and improvisation. It also seeks to forge connections between like-minded artists from the NY and Boston scenes. COMPROVISED is organized and operated by Travis Alford, Tanya Kalmanovitch, and Dan VanHassel.
Officially established in September 2008, COMPROVISED is the result of a collaborative effort by a group of Boston and NY-area musicians, many of who are students and alumni of the New England Conservatory, to resurvey the traditional lines separating the musical world into its current "classical" vs. "other" camps. When coming together to confront this divide, they asked a simple question: Why? Why must improvisation be limited to the world of jazz? Why does one have to compose in a certain genre? Why do I as a musician have to define myself based on the black and white world of commercialism and marketing?
The music presented by COMPROVISED is sometimes composed, sometimes improvised, or more often a combination of the two. The musicians involved in this project believe that the mind of the creator as well as the musical experiences and abilities of the performers are all vital and rewarding parts of the total creative process, which can and should be utilized, as deemed necessary, for the creation of a work of art.
